*What
are the reasons for the large discreptancy between 7 and 10 million?
Soviet
figures are notoriously unreliable - this cover up was of enormous proportions.
By 1932 almost all sources of reliable statistics were systematically destroyed.
In his plan to "Russify" (homogenize and blend) all the countries
that were
under his control, Stalin routinely ordered replacements of population from
all over USSR to the villages which were decimated by the famine. Although census
shows a population loss of about 7 million, these census figures includes all
the new people who were brought in to fill up the 'dead' villages.

Once back
in New York, Duranty confided to a fellow reporter, "probably 10
million Ukrainians died" during the great famine of 1932-33.

million people may have died directly or indirectly from lack of food

It is marked "For distribution to the King, the Cabinet and the Dominions"; it bears the stamp "Circulated to the Cabinet by direction of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs"; and it contains a note saying "Paragraph 13 is horrifying - particularly coming from Mr. Duranty." (Paragraph 13 is the one in which Duranty's estimate of 10 million dead is reported.) But this leads us to other questions: how much Whitehall knew about the famine, why it chose to refer to it publicly as an "illegal famine," and why it brushed off all requests for appeals to the Soviet government.

Service wants to downplay the magnitude / coverup
and make this population loss to appear to be one of bad economic policy
rather than a deliberate genocide, with the intent to eradicate the Ukrainian
people and repopulate Ukraine with Russians. The protocols instructing
horrendous acts at that time are on Stalin's public record.

Still in 2009, the coverup persists with research panels taking the side of the the Russian Service. "Whilst claiming not to get politically involved, Wheatcroft (Professor Stephen Wheatcroft - the University of Melbourne) screamed at the audience, ‘Look at this!’ holding up the Holodomor brochure prepared by Ukraine – stating something to the effect, ‘It says 6-10 million, when your own Institute of Demography says 3.5 million perished. This in unhelpful propaganda!’ " *

In his Book "Stalin: Court of the Red Star", Jewish historian Sebag Montefiore writes that during the darkest period of terror, when the Communist killing machine worked in full force, Stalin was surrounded by beautiful, young Jewish women.
Stalin's close associates and loyalists included member of the Central Committee and Politburo Lazar Kaganovich. Montefiore characterizes him as the "first Stalinist" and adds that those starving to death in Ukraine, an unparalleled tragedy in the history of human kind aside from the Nazi horrors and Mao's terror in China, did not move Kaganovich.”

on Yanukovych 2010 declaration that this was not a genocide:

Canada-May 12, 2010- 1.2 million Canadians trace their roots to
Ukraine - the second largest Ukrainian community outside of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress is is deeply distraught by President
Yanukovych's recent remark diminishes the enormous suffering
of the Ukrainian people in the Holodomor, by saying it was a consequence
of Stalin's totalitarian regime, rather than a genocide.
This position is contrary to the law of Ukraine, the vast body of recent academic research based on original Soviet archives in Ukraine, the position of the previous Ukrainian government, the current Government of Canada, the Ukrainian World Congress and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, instead putting it in accord with Russia's interpretation.
The famine was largely engineered by the Soviet regime of Joseph Stalin, and it was so extreme and purposeful in Ukraine that it can reasonably be called an act of ethnic genocide. In terms of its cost in human lives, the famine was the most costly of all genocidal operation of Stalin and the Communist Party. It targeted the destruction of the Ukrainian intelligentsia/Ukrainian national elites. What happened in Ukraine respects the definition of Genocide in the UN Convention.
The areas outside Ukraine where the famine took place were largely populated by Ukrainians. Dr. Raphael Lemkin, the father of the United Nations genocide convention, declared that the Holodomor was a genocide as it involved "the destruction, not of individual only, but of a culture and a nation." The genocidal nature of the Holodomor is enshrined in Ukrainian law as it is in a great number of countries around the world, including Canada.
